Three figures pause at the edge of the water, their bodies warm with golden light against the cool expanse of sea and sky behind them. One leans against a metal railing, weight settled into his hips, facing away. Another perches on the rail itself, one foot lifted, mid-conversation. The third sits on the rail's edge, arms propped, feet dangling free. There is no urgency here — only the particular ease of a summer afternoon that feels as though it might last forever. The ocean behind them is rendered in long, layered strokes of cerulean and pale aqua, the surface barely stirring, while the sky above dissolves from soft gold at the horizon into a hazy, cloud-scattered blue. The linen weave breathes through the paint in places, especially across the water, giving the scene a gentle, luminous quality — as if the light itself is part of the fabric. The figures are painted with warmth and economy, their amber skin applied in confident, fluid strokes that suggest muscle and posture without overworking the detail. What stays with you is the quality of the between-moment — not the swim, not the leap, but the pause before or after, when time loosens its grip. Gerda captures something true about the way bodies exist in the world when they feel at home in it: unselfconscious, unhurried, alive to the salt air and the shimmer of water just below.
